Stephanie Heinecken of Old Snowmass started researching the idea of making hip and stylish reusable grocery bags last year, especially after recognizing how many bags she went through at the store, buying groceries for her growing family: “When I found out that only 1 percent of all plastic bags are recycled, something just snapped in my brain.” It is estimated that using one reusable grocery bag saves about 1,000 plastic bags over the course of the bag’s life. “When you realize that such a small change can make a very realizable difference, you have to say to yourself, I can do THAT.”
She had been using large canvas duffels to tote her groceries. “I figured that shoppers didn’t need the heavy-weight material just to get the few steps from the store to the car to the house,” says Heinecken, who adds that her mission for Saxsy Bags is to “ensure a better future for all by spreading a responsible environmental message through color, functionality and fashion.”
